What to do in Spain in August

The beach is a popular destination during August in Spain, as the weather can get painfully hot. You could visit Santander in Cantabria for classical music concerts, and also go canoe racing on the River Sella. Barcelona and other towns in Catalonia also hold their major festivals during this month. Probably August’s biggest highlight is the Tomatina Tomato Fight at Valencia, where, as the name suggests, is a huge food fight festival. The fight itself starts at 11am and lasts for an hour, but the night before will have much partying. Make sure to waterproof your camera and prepare yourself for rough play.
